Who We Are
It all began in 1999 with a flight over the largest living structure in the world, the Great Barrier Reef. Though Sam Cullen (Founder) and his team didn’t know it then, the next 15 years would be dedicated to protecting the world's most unique natural wonder.
4planet, the Great Barrier Reef climate movement, started its life as the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival in Port Douglas, far north Queensland back in 2011. A little fundraiser with a big heart, it was the starting gun setting in motion a race to change the fate of awareness of the intrinsic environmental and economic value of the Great Barrier Reef.
run4reef, as it was known, would soon attract a more broad focus on the message of climate change and the Great Barrier Reef than the running event itself. For the next decade, mass reef bleaching, catastrophic fires and devastating floods made national headlines and forced the climate change conversation amongst climate scientists and politicians.
In 2023, run4planet took the climate conversation to the nation inviting individuals to participate in a free and easy way. Free participation for all of us to better understand climate change and join in the climate conversation.
Today, 4planet has morphed into a multi-faceted global environmental movement. 4planet knows that the best ambassadors for the safety and future of the Great Barrier Reef and the planet as a whole are passionate, everyday Aussies willing to make a change and spread the word!
The 4planet mission and objectives in partnership with the QLD Government:
- To highlight and realise the value in taking the climate conversation to everyday Aussies and visitors to the Great Barrier Reef.
- To connect and illustrate the elemental link between devastating weather events such as fires and floods affecting humans, with the unique environmental challenges facing the Great Barrier
- To emphasize the intrinsic value of reef tourism operators and their existing role as primary research facilitators and reef guardians
- To encourage an easy but affective way to participate in raising awareness and taking climate action
- The power of social awareness and consumer behaviour
- To foster and reward responsible political and corporate policy making
